Information

The Department of Psychiatric Social Work conducts a ‘Certificate Course in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Aftercare’. In 2018 the department started an M. Phil in Psychiatric Social Work course affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Science, Nashik. The department has psycho-social rehabilitation day care services with the pre-primary vocational therapy unit. The department conducts various psychosocial interventions such as psycho-education, supportive counselling, motivational enhancement therapy and activity scheduling at the individual level and also in group sessions. Marital & family counselling, family therapy, social skills training, psychodrama and music therapy are also provided. Various awareness programs and community orientation programs are also organized at the community level. The department also liaisons with various Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) for their outreach programs to spread awareness about mental health in the community.

Aim

This is a fulltime intensive clinical training course providing opportunities for appropriate practicum and apprenticeship experiences to develop an understanding of comprehenssive psychiatric care with psycho social perspective.

Eligibility

2 years full time MSW/ M.A. in /in Social Work from a recognized University securing not less than 55% marks in aggregate of the master’s degree as a whole. For SC/ST/OBC category, minimum of 50% marks in aggregate is essential as per the rules of Government of India.

Objectives

  1. Working on Case History Taking and diagnosis of the mental disorders
  2. Assessment of psychosocial problems and plan for psychosocial interventions
  3. Counseling Patients and Family members
  4. Working with groups through Group Psychotherapy
  5. Psycho education for Individuals, Families and Groups
  6. Working with couples through Marital therapy
  7. Working with families through various approaches of Family Therapy

  1. Psychosocial Rehabilitation of persons with Chronic Mental Illness
  2. Extending services for Community Mental Health for promotive and preventive aspects of mental health problems.
  3. Psychosocial care in Disaster Mental Health
  4. Make Home visits as part of treatment process
  5. Undertake research activities in the areas of psychiatric social work
  6. Preparing documentation in field of psychiatric social work
  7. Awareness of legal and administrative issues involved in psychiatric social work

Aim

  1. To educate and train students in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation.
  2. To develop knowledge, skills and attitude to work with individuals, groups and communities, facing the problems of acute and chronic mental illness.
  3. To develop the students' skills in assessment, counselling and therapeutic interventions with adequate knowledge base.
  4. To enable the interdisciplinary collaboration for provision of services and issues related to persons with disabilities.
  5. To provide students with opportunities for personal development.
