Clinical Psychology

The Department of Clinical Psychology runs a ‘Certificate course in Counselling’ with an intake capacity of 12 students per year. It carries out various assessments like IQ testing, Learning Disability Assessment, Personality Assessment and Diagnostic Psychometry. The department provides modern psychotherapeutic techniques such as Behaviour therapy, Cognitive Behavioural therapy, Dialectical Behaviour therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour therapy, Motivational Enhancement therapy, Family therapy, Marital therapy and Supportive therapy. Apart from regular lectures, group activities, film screening, journal clubs and discussions on recent updates in therapy are also conducted. Outreach activities are also carried out by the department such as stress management workshops to the government & corporate sector. Learning Disability workshops for school teachers are also conducted. Students from different colleges in the state also come for internship and observation postings. They are also involved in research on psychological issues.

Information

Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health has well equipped clinical psychology department. The department of clinical Psychology works in the area of patient care, teaching, clinical services, resource development and community services. It has a major role in the process of disability certification for Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability, Psychometric assessments and psycho-therapeutic work-up. Apart from regular lectures, group activities, film screening, discussions on recent updates in therapy are also conducted. To enhance the subject knowledge and practical skills of the students, department organizes workshops and guest lectures where experts from the field are invited. Outreach activities are also carried out by the department such as stress management workshops to the Government & Corporate sector. Learning Disability workshops for school teachers are also conducted. Students from different colleges of Maharashtra are provided observership by the department.

M.Phil in Clinical Psychology

The Department has started M.Phil in Clinical Psychology from Academic year 2021-2022 with recognition by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi and is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.

Aim

The aim of this course is to prepare the trainee to function as a qualified professional Clinical Psychologist in the areas of mental and physical health by offering Diagnostic, Therapeutic, Rehabilitative, Administrative services, and to work towards promoting the well-being and quality-of-life of individuals.

Objectives

The course is developed as a rigorous two-year program with extensive theoretical inputs and widespread clinical experience to acquire the necessary skills in the area of Clinical Psychology. On completion of the course, the trainee is expected to perform the following functions:

  1. Diagnose mental health problems.
  2. Conceptualize specific adult and child mental health problems within a psychological framework, giving due consideration to psychosocial/ contextual factors, and carryout relevant treatment/management.
  3. Apply psychological principles and techniques in rehabilitating persons with mental health problems and disabilities.
  4. Work with the psychosocial dimensions of physical diseases, formulate and undertake focused/targeted psychosocial interventions.
  5. Work with community to promote health, quality-of-life and psycho-logical well-being.
  6. Undertake research in the areas of clinical psychology such as, mental health/illness, physical health/diseases and relevant societal issues viz. misconception, stigma, discrimination, social tension, gender construction, life style etc.
  7. Undertake responsibilities connected with teaching and training in core and allied areas of Clinical Psychology.
  8. Undertake administrative and supervisory/decision-making responsibilities in mental health area.
  9. Provide expert testimony in the court of law assuming different roles.

Eligibility

  1. Minimum educational requirement for admission to this course will be 2 years M.A./M.Sc. degree in Psychology from a university recognized by the UGC with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.
  2. For SC/ST category, minimum of 50% marks in aggregate is essential, as per GOI.
  3. Student should be domicile of Maharashtra State.

Certificate Course in Counseling

The department of clinical psychology runs Certificate Course in Counseling since 1993-94. It is the only Government approved post P.G. Course in the state of Maharashtra. This one year course also provides opportunity for the students to apply their practical skills and knowledge during the 3 months of internship under the supervision of the faculty after the successful completion of the course.

Observership to different postgraduate students of psychology discipline

Dept. of Clinical Psychology also provides observership for psychology students from different universities and colleges. Students who have completed or doing their post-graduation in Psychology can apply for observership. During the observership, students are posted to Psychiatry OPD, Psychology OPD and Psychiatry ward.

Training workshops on learning disability for school teachers and principals

As a part of awareness of learning disabilities and related academic difficulties, Dept. of clinical Psychology conducts various training and awareness programs for teachers and principals of different government and private schools in Pune.

Community Services

Training workshops on stress management for school students and other professionals: Till date, various workshops were arranged by dept. of clinical psychology for students appearing for their board exams and also for students of undergraduates and post graduates. There were also many training programs arranged for health care workers and other frontline workers like staff nurses, resident doctors and police personals, in the difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic.
